Chapter 12
What are you doing!? Are you crazy?
He knew the answer to that, but he wasnât ready to leave her just yet. He didnât know why, but he had to find out. It had been fifteen minutes since she went upstairs. He hoped everything was okay. The house seemed so peaceful with all the kids in bed. He could definitely get used to this. He heard the soft footsteps of someone coming down the stairs. He hoped she wouldnât be able to see how nervous he was. He was on pins and needles waiting for her to say something. Anything.
He heard her walk up behind him and it took everything not to turn and look at her. âYou know, David, I appreciate what you have done tonight and what you are doing now, but I can handle it. I have been for a while now. You donât need to stay.â
âIf I make you uneasy, Iâll go. If I scare you in any way, tell me now and I will leave. I just want to pay you back for your kindness. And maybe spend time with what I hope is a new friend.â He still had not turned round. He was half afraid of what he would see and what he would do if he looked at her. He had not been alone with her in eight years. Every time they were in the same room together, someone else was there.
There was silence for a long moment. He heard her walk across the room, open and shut a drawer and then heard her walk his way. She came up beside him on his right and grabbed a dish.
âThank you again.â she said as she dried each dish that he had already washed. âYouâre a good man, David. I hope you know that.â
âI wonder sometimes, but I am glad you think so.â He paused for a minute, âI hope I didnât upset the kids too much.â
âWhy do you think you would upset them?â
He paused for a moment. âWell, the scars.â
âI guess they are fine, they never said anything about them. Kids may seem like they only see the surface, but they can be more honest about things than adults. You shared a bit of yourself with them tonight and they may have stopped seeing the scars. I am not sure they have ever really noticed them. They are just a part of who you are to the kids.â She paused for a moment, âDid that make sense?â
âYes, plenty. Wish more adults would do that.â
âMe too. They see me with three kids and the looks on their faces goes from happy to pity. Men turn the other way and wonât give me a second look.â
He thought for a minute about what to say next. Hearing her talk about other men was not on the top of his list. âIt was...interesting listening to the banter.â
She gave a little âhmmâ and said, âThatâs funny. I thought you were about to bolt out of here like a cat who got his tail stuck in a door.
